First big regatta this weekend

The South Island’s first major rowing regatta of 2018 begins at Lake Ruataniwha today.

About 1300 rowers from 40 clubs and schools will make the trip to the Canterbury Championships, with a strong Otago contingent expected.

It will provide a good lead-in to the South Island championships, held at the same venue in two week’s time.

Meanwhile, for the school crews it will be another chance to test themselves before the Maadi Cup later in the year.

Indeed, Otago Boys’ High School and St Hilda’s Collegiate have both travelled up early, having held pre-regatta camps there.

Racing begins at 7am this morning, with the last race of the weekend scheduled for 1.40pm tomorrow.
