Boat, bike and bat add to feel-good factor of Highlanders' win

One with a boat, one with a bike and one with a bat.

Three Otago sporting greats combined for a memorable weekend to capitalise on the feel-good factor created by the Highlanders' win on Friday night.

Hamish Bond, Alison Shanks and Craig Cumming rowed, cycled and batted their way into the record books.

World champion Bond (25) won a third title at the national rowing regatta at Lake Ruataniwha and was later named New Zealand rower of the year.

It capped a 12-month period during which Bond was unbeaten in major domestic and international regattas.

Former world cycling champion Shanks (28) led her New Zealand women's pursuit team to the World Cup title in the final round of the series in England.

The New Zealanders - Shanks, Lauren Ellis and Jamie Nielsen - were beaten in the Manchester final, by Great Britain, but set a personal-best time and won the overall title.

Finally, Otago cricket captain Cumming (35) surpassed the immortal Bert Sutcliffe as the leading century-maker for the province.

Stranded on 17 tons since the end of last summer, Cumming scored 127 not out against Canterbury on the third day of the Plunket Shield match in Queenstown on Saturday.

For good measure, he then became the sixth Otago batsman to score two centuries in a game, posting 127 in the second innings yesterday.

The Volts fell two runs short of an outright victory, chasing 345.
