No, you have the Ranfurly Shield.
Fine, YOU have the Ranfurly Shield.
It has been that sort of season.
For just the second time in history, five teams have held the Ranfurly Shield in the same year.
Taranaki started 2025 as the holders after taking the Shield off Tasman at the end of 2024.
Taranaki had little trouble smashing amateur Heartland teams King Country (78-7) and Thames Valley (97-0) before making it three successful defences with a 23-3 win over Northland.
But the Bulls came unstuck against Waikato, who grabbed the Log o’ Wood with a 23-22 win on August 23.
Waikato then delivered one of the all-time stinkers, making a million mistakes as they were beaten 25-10 by an inspired Southland team on August 31.
The Stags must have celebrated a little hard as they put up a shocking effort in their first defence and were smashed 54-12 by Canterbury on September 6.
Canterbury made one successful defence, pipping Tasman 31-25, but had no answer for an inspired Otago side.
The other musical-chair season was 1950, when Otago started the season as Ranfurly Shield holders before Canterbury, Wairarapa, South Canterbury and North Auckland had a turn.
Hopefully, Otago — and not North Harbour — is the last name engraved on the Shield this year.
