Rugby: ORFU streamlines committee structure

A new metropolitan rugby committee will be introduced next year to oversee amateur rugby in Otago.

At an Otago Rugby Football Union special general meeting earlier this week it was agreed to pass recommendations which will result in the phasing out of both the rugby council and the metropolitan committee.

These two groups will be replaced by the new metropolitan rugby committee. It will be made up of seven elected representatives from the clubs, representatives from referees and junior rugby and a union staff member.

Otago Rugby Football Union chief executive Richard Reid said the new committee was an attempt to streamline as three committees seemed cumbersome when two - including the union's board - could do the job.

The election of the members on to the new metropolitan rugby committee will be made at the union's annual general meeting in March.

The annual meeting usually takes place in February but is later than usual as a couple of board members are unavailable until March.

Most of the other recommendations were passed at the special meeting. The country board will no longer refer matters to the rugby council. Instead it will either review matters itself, refer it to union staff or the board.

The president and vice-president will continue to have voting rights on the board. It was recommended they lose their voting rights but the delegates at the meeting voted against that suggestion.

A junior advisory group will be established and will oversee all rugby from secondary school age down.
