Sandi Wheeler and Barbara Gazeley are the joint winners of the Otago rugby woman of the year award.

But they are really the Otago rugby mothers of the year.

"We are like mums to the Alhambra-Union boys," Wheeler (53) said.

"A lot of the team are students and we feed them after games and make them soup after Thursday night training."

They won the 35th annual award for their expertise at catering for the Alhambra-Union club, Otago, the Highlanders, the All Blacks and referees.

"I don't like a lot of fuss," Gazeley (52) said. "I just like meeting and feeding people."

Catering is the life for the joint owners of the Wakari Dairy and coffee shop.

"It's not just a job. I really enjoy it," Wheeler said. "I like mixing and talking with the players."

Wheeler (nee Birchall) first became interested in rugby when she met the Alhambra-Union chairman Gary Wheeler in 1972 and the love of the game continued after the couple were married three years later.

Her four sons - Glenn (33), Ryan (29), Shaun (26) and Allan (22) - all played for the Alhambra-Union club.

"The boys were so dedicated to the sport," she said. "We just lived and breathed rugby each Saturday. It has been our life."

Gazeley (nee Murphy) became interested in rugby when her boys - Ben (26) and Tim (22) - started playing.

Daughter Sarah, Ben's twin, also played at Kaikorai Valley College.

"It was a big shock to me on the night," Wheeler said. "It blew me away. But it was a very nice award."

The awards night was held at the Alhambra-Union club and the guest speaker was club rugby commentator Paul Dwyer.
