ODT Online rugby writer Jeff Cheshire rates the Otago players on their performance against Bay of Plenty in Dunedin yesterday.

Tony Ensor 7.5/10: Not as deadly on the counter this time, but still had a hand in three tries. Offloaded well to Dawai for the first, regathered a chip and brilliantly flicked it inside to Renton in the lead-up to the second, then ran down a kick from 40 metres out to score the third.

Jayden Spence 6.5/10: Chased well and made a few tackles. Had a couple of nice touches with ball in hand and is getting better at working himself into the game from the wing.

Matt Faddes 8/10: Ran strongly, as always, scoring two good tries, one which saw him carry a defender over the line and another coming from a good pick-up before running 95 metres. Was a handful on attack and solid on defence.

Sio Tomkinson 6.5/10: Was very prominent on the kick chase, getting up fast and making the tackle. Offloaded well a few times and was tidy in taking the ball up and distributing to the danger men outside him.

Gavin Stark 6/10: Didn't get too many chances. Put a nice chip in, which Ensor regathered, in the lead-up to the second try. Looked a bit lost on a couple of occasions on defence, although that is not unexpected as he gets used to this team and the level of play.

Peter Breen 7.5/10: Kicked well again, took a couple of good gaps and controlled play.

Josh Renton 7.5/10: Set up three tries, one by delivering an inside ball to Dawai after an eight-nine from the scrum, another by taking a couple of sideways steps to allow Smith to get on the outside of his man and a third with his 40 metre box kick. Passed and kicked well too.

Naulia Dawai 7.5/10: Was strong running the ball, although also well-contained after scoring early and dropping a second chance. Made plenty of tackles as per usual and brought energy, particularly in chasing the kick-offs.

James Lentjes (No Rating): Played the first 15 minutes before leaving with an injury. Did not get much chance to make an impact, but got quickly to rucks in support.

Jackson Hemopo 7/10: Had a great start, ripping the ball off a Bay of Plenty ball runner, then made a breakdown turnover not long after. Won a couple of lineouts and made a few tackles, although became quieter as the match went on.

Tom Franklin 8/10: Probably his most active defensive performance of the season, making plenty of tackles in close and in open field. Got his hands on the ball a few times and looked to offload, while also doing well in the air. Made a couple of mistakes, but on the whole played very well.

Blair Tweed 7/10: A typically busy and physical, at times brutal, performance from Tweed who got through his usual quota of work in the tight.

Hisa Sasagi 6/10: Solid around the field, made a few tackles and supported well at the breakdown.

Liam Coltman 6.5/10: Made a key break in the lead-up to a try, before scoring it a few minutes later. Made a few tackles and got around the field well.

Craig Millar 6.5/10: Got through his work making tackles and getting to rucks.

Sekonaia Pole 5.5/10: A bit quiet, although came on for the last half hour when the whole team started functioning poorly and the game became loose. Threw well to the lineout and didn't do much wrong.

Aki Seiuli 5.5/10: Another who was quiet, but as was the case with Pole, Otago did not have much ball when he was on and Bay of Plenty looked to play an open game, which made it hard for the tight forwards to make an impact.

Donald Brighouse 5/10: Played the last 20 minutes and made a few tackles, but was not hugely noticeable in the open.

Josh Dickson 6/10: Came on at blindside flanker and was exceptional in the air, particularly at the back of the lineout where he was a safe target.

Adam Knight 7/10: Replaced Lentjes and after missing an early cleanout, came right and just kept on tackling. Was good at the back of the lineout and came up with a crucial steal five metres from the line with the score at 43-30 to make amends for conceding a penalty the previous lineout.

Kaide Whiting 6/10: Made a good run after an eight-nine move going blind from a scrum. Aside from that was tidy and passed well.

Fletcher Smith 6.5/10: Did not see much ball, despite being on for 35 minutes. Tidy enough and beat his man on the outside after going blind off the scrum, which he then converted from wide out.

Michael Collins 6/10: Hardly got a chance on attack, made a couple of tackles and was tidy in what he did.
