Rugby: Smith happy to play on wing

Highlanders star Ben Smith is happy to be playing on the wing and says he is trying to look for as much ball as possible.

Smith, who impressed in last week's 30-16 loss to the Sharks, said he was happy to play anywhere.

"I'm happy wherever I play as long as I'm contributing to the team. Sometimes it can be frustrating not getting the ball but I have been looking for it. Sometimes the ball just doesn't go your way and that is the way the game goes," Smith said.

Smith, who has played further infield at club level for Green Island, said the Highlanders needed to score more tries, and get through some tough defence.

"Last week we ended up having to take three points rather than getting those seven-pointers. That makes a big difference and was a real key for us. But they did have a very good defence."

Smith said the aim was to get more quick ball from the breakdown, and to perhaps look at moving the ball a bit wider.

The 23-year-old said the Highlanders needed to take the game to the Lions and get points on the board early tonight.

"We've got to score a few points to be comfortable and not have to rely on a 50-50 decision going our way near the end of the game."

Smith won a call-up for the All Blacks last year and said it was a great six weeks.

"Just being able to learn from the guys and realising how big the All Blacks are over there. They really are massive. Just everywhere you go and all the trainings we had big crowds.

"The stadiums were packed out. I was happy with the two games I got."

Smith said the All Black selectors had not been in touch so far this season, but he was simply concentrating on playing as well as he could for the Highlanders.
