Rugby: South Otago stays leader after victory

South Otago kept its top spot in the Highlanders first XV secondary schools competition with a commanding 33-8 win over John McGlashan in Dunedin on Saturday.

However, it was given a hurry-up at the start by a McGlashan team that came out firing and led 8-0 after 20 minutes.

The scores were even at 8-8 at half-time.

South Otago put its stamp on the game in the second spell by scoring five more tries.

Prop Daniel Miller had an outstanding game and scored two tries.

Another key player in the pack was hooker Karl Still with his mobility around the paddock.

South Otago played with accuracy in the second spell with play efficiently directed by first five-eighth Quinten Gare.

Matt Faddes had a strong game at centre and fullback Tony Ensor was dangerous on the counter-attack.

Waitaki Boys High School remained in the top three after beating Central Southland College 86-0 and Dunstan beat Gore 13-3.
