Rugby: Victim of abuse warns Warratahs fans to stay away

Waratahs rugby fans are being warned to stay away from Christchurch for the Super 14 final - by a Hurricanes supporter who says his Saturday night was ruined by boorish and abusive behaviour.

AMI Stadium management is investigating after Craig Holden, 36, left the ground vowing never to attend another rugby match in Christchurch.

"I have never had an experience like this before and I've been to rugby all around the world," Mr Holden told The Press newspaper.

He said the man he was seated next to used obscene language throughout the match and wanted to fight him.

"It ruined the night and I won't ever go back," he said. "It gave me every indication for why they can't sell out." Mr Holden said he and his pregnant wife were the only ones to tell the man to be quiet. Other Crusaders fans were guilty of letting him get away with his abuse.

He said a security guard was made aware of the problem, but took no action.

He advised Waratahs fans to skip the final this Saturday.

"I don't think they will enjoy the experience." Mr Holden, who said he'd played rugby for Wellington B and the Wellington Colts, said part of the fun of going to a game was bantering with opposition supporters, but it should be good-natured.

Stadium management company Vbase chief executive Bryan Pearson said he was sorry and would investigate.

"It's always a concern whenever someone attends a game and doesn't have a great experience," he said.
