It was a good day overall for Southern players at the national junior 18 and under championships in Auckland yesterday but some late, close tiebreak losses prevented it from being an excellent day.

After winning their first-round doubles 6-0, 6-0 Carlos Reid and Mitchell Sizemore upset third seeds Liam Cunliffe and Luke Taplin (North Harbour) 6-2, 6-0 on Wednesday evening.

However, in a heartbreaking quarterfinal, they went down 4-6, 6-4 10-6 to another seeded pair yesterday in Dylan Heap (Canterbury) and Liam Stoica (Auckland) after leading by a set and 4-2 and then by 5-1 in the match tiebreak.

"We just didn't play well enough when it mattered most,'' Reid said.

Sizemore had a big day after a rain delay and beat Charlie Tomlinson (Auckland) 2-6, 6-1, 10-8 to make the semifinal of the main draw consolation, but then lost to top seed Stoica 6-4, 0-6, 10-4. He won more games but again was unable to capitalise when it mattered.

Paddy Ou lost to fourth seed Chris Zhang (Auckland) 2-6, 6-1, 10-8 in yet another tiebreak in the same event.

In the girls' consolation, Rebecca Dellaway (North Otago) beat Amily Suga (North Harbour) 3-6, 6-2, 13-11 and then Amy Galloway (Central) 6-3, 6-4 to make today's final.

Emilia Price (Queenstown) won her consolation quarterfinal 6-4, 6-1 but lost to top seed Tamara Anderson (Central) 14-12 in the match tiebreak after having several chances. Price and her Auckland partner, Holly Stewart, now meet the doubles fourth seeds after a 6-1, 6-1 win.

Josh McDermott (Queenstown) has won four matches in the qualifying consolation to make the final today.
