The environmental work being done on a large Culverden dairy farm is a source of pride for its international investment owners.

The Triangle, at 865 Balmoral Station Rd, is one of 20 farms owned worldwide by the multi-national TRG (The Rohatyn Group) Management LP company, which has offices in 14 countries, including New Zealand.

One of the partners in the company, Tauranga's Stuart Donald, attended a field day and farm tour held at the farm last Thursday. He said he was proud of what had been achieved at the property to reduce its environmental footprint.

''There is a lot more awareness about the environment now and we are more aware of what can be done to protect it,'' he said.

''Like all farmers around the world we want to ensure we have fresh water like we used to.''

The field day was organised to showcase the environmental work sharemilker Nigel Gardiner has achieved on the farm. This includes protecting a natural wetland area, creating new wetlands with extensive native plantings, and protecting a stream with a small population of endangered freshwater mussels.

The field day was organised by Hurunui Biodiversity Group members who share an interest in conserving and enhancing natural and indigenous biodiversity within the Hurunui.

A group trustee, Jamie McFadden, co-owner of the Hurunui Natives plant nursery, said they were pleased with the field-day turnout, which included a diverse group of people of all ages and occupations.

The feedback from those attending had been positive.

''There were lots of questions and people learnt a lot.''
