Suspicious fire rips through Kaiapoi house

One person was taken to hospital after a suspicious house fire in Kaiapoi on Monday morning.

Emergency services were called to the blaze on Candy Cres just before 2am.

Hato Hone St John said one person was taken to Christchurch Hospital in a moderate condition.

A Fire and Emergency NZ spokesperson said three fire trucks attended the blaze, which caused significant damage to the house.

Crews from the Kaiapoi and Woodend stations had extinguished the fire and left the premises at 4am.

But the spokesperson said a flare-up in the roof cavity meant the crews had to return to the scene about two hours later.

The fire was deemed to be suspicious and a scene guard was left at the property, the spokesperson said.

A fire investigator was at the house on Monday morning.
