Book lovers and bargain hunters are in for a treat, as more than 70,000 books and a huge collection of bric-a-brac are to be sold in The Star Regent 24 Hour Book Sale.

The giant annual community fundraising event, which will run from 10am-10pm tomorrow and Saturday at the Edgar Centre’s More FM Arena, is a major fundraiser for the Regent Theatre. Entry is free.

Sale co-ordinator Kath Wallace said it was the second year it had been held at the Edgar Centre, a move which proved very popular with punters last year.

"The More FM Arena is a great space for the sale — it is light and airy, there is lots of room for displaying the books and bric-a-brac, and plenty of space for browsing.

"It is also all on one level, which makes it easily accessible for everyone.

"People will have access to the large carpark as well — so it is ideal, really."

About 2400 boxes of about 30 books each have been transported from the book-sorting and storage space in Kaikorai Valley to the Edgar Centre, and are laid out on tables, ready for punters to arrive.

Mrs Wallace paid tribute to the dozens of regular book-sorting and sale volunteers for their efforts in preparing the books for sale, helping to shift them, set up and staffing the sale itself.

She also acknowledged the teams of strong volunteers from the community, along with Task Force Green and Southern Rugby, who had stepped up to help with shifting the thousands of boxes to the Edgar Centre.

"It’s a huge effort and we really appreciate everything our volunteers do in support of the theatre."
