Heritage funding round closing soon

The latest round of the Dunedin Heritage Fund closes for applications on Sunday.

On Monday, DCC heritage adviser Mark Maudsley said: "We’ve had a few come through but I expect more this week."

On average, 10 to 15 applications for grants are received for each quarterly round.

"Usually, a high percentage is accepted but sometimes [approval is] deferred for more information to be submitted," Mr Maudsley said.

He liked to work with building owners ahead of them submitting applications to ensure the process runs smoothly.

The Heritage Fund, jointly administered by the DCC and Heritage New Zealand, can make grants to owners/occupiers of any historic place within Dunedin.

Privately owned properties as well as public places are included, with each application considered on its merits.

"It’s a grant, not a loan," Mr Maudsley said.

Grants are made available for two years and paid after work is completed.

The amount varies, depending on what is to be done. Projects supported so far this year range from $5000 for repairs to two privately owned properties to $50,000 for roofing work on the former St David’s church building in North Rd, North East Valley.

The committee will meet in August to assess this quarter’s applications.
