Stalwart Dunedin Central Ladies Friendship Club member Margaret Campbell was taken by surprise when she became a guest of honour at the club’s recent 33rd birthday celebrations.

Mrs Campbell was attending the event with former member and past president Janet Hopkins, when she was called up to receive a life membership for her services to the club.

"It gave me quite a shock, I can tell you," she said.

Dunedin Central Ladies Friendship Club president Adrienne Duncan said Mrs Campbell was a worthy recipient of the life membership, for her strong, active and supportive involvement in the group for many years.

"As well as being a past president and committee member, Margaret is the kind of special, supportive and loyal member all clubs love to have," Mrs Duncan said.

Mrs Campbell joined the club 25 years ago shortly after she retired — when it was still part of Probus, and she quickly became involved in its many activities.

"I went along with a friends just to check it out, and it has become a really important part of my life over the years," she said.

"The club members are a nice group of people, and we keep it interesting."

The Dunedin Central Ladies Friendship Club has twice-monthly get-togethers, on the first and third Wednesday of each month, for meetings with guest speakers and a range of outings.

As members grew older, it was important to keep the club active by inviting new members to join, she said.

"So, we would be very keen to hear from retired and semi-retired women who would like to give it a go."
