It has been a year of ups and downs with plenty to ponder over the summer break. But some things stay the same, and one of those is the smile on Santa’s face as he greets children at Christmas. The Star reporter Simon Henderson caught up with the jolly man of the moment at Meridian Mall.

What is it like to ride through the air in a sleigh?

It is great fun! I can see everything from up there, New Zealand is the most beautiful country to fly over!

What gifts do you like to get at Christmas?

I love getting nice letters and cards from children all over the world.

What do you do when you have delivered your last gift?

I go home and spend quality time with Mrs Claus. She misses me as I am a very busy man in December!

Have people in the South been naughty or nice this year?

They have been very nice as always, I love to come here and see all of the lovely children of Dunedin.

What would you like to say to children in Dunedin this Christmas?

It has been lovely to see you again, Dunedin. I will be here until Christmas Eve so there is still time to come and say hi and let me know how good you have been. Take care, be kind and have a fantastic Christmas with all of your loved ones.
