‘Ball rolling’ on Christmas dinner plans

Planning is in full swing for Dunedin’s annual Community Christmas Dinner, which will bring up to 500 people together at Dunedin Town Hall on Christmas Day.

A fixture of the city’s Christmas calendar for more than 20 years, the Community Christmas Dinner has been organised for the past seven years by the Acts of Kindness Charitable Trust.

In a year when Covid-19 had affected many community events, the trust was determined to go ahead with the Christmas celebration, trustee Grant Hardy said.

"At the moment, we are getting the ball rolling on organising the Christmas dinner, which aims to ensure that no-one need be alone on Christmas Day."

The Community Christmas Dinner will be the second major event to be organised by the trust this year, following on from the Christmas in the Stadium event on December 5.

Mr Hardy said there would be a slight adjustment to the menu — a full kiwi Christmas dinner with all the trimmings, with this year’s meat to be lamb and ham.

The food would be cooked in Compass facilities, with the trust employing chefs to lead and supervise the food preparation.

The Community Christmas Dinner regularly attracts around 500 people to Dunedin Town Hall, along with a small army of volunteers preparing and serving food, as well as dozens of table hosts.

Mr Hardy looks forward to the Community Christmas Dinner every year.

"It’s a very special event — the community truly serves the community," he said.

To register as a guest for the event, phone Dunedin Community House on 471-6150, or register online at dch.org.nz.
