Apple's hotly anticipated iPhone 4 finally went on sale in New Zealand this afternoon, after prospective buyers had their hopes dashed when they were turned away from stores this morning.

Hundreds queued outside stores around the country this morning, some since before dawn, but were told the phone was not available.

The queues began to form again after Vodafone confirmed late this morning that the smartphone would go on sale at selected stores from midday.

A line of more than 70 people snaked down Wellington's Lambton Quay this afternoon. There were similar scenes on Auckland's Queen St.

Vodafone spokesman Paul Brislen said stocks were limited, so the phone would only be available on account.

The 16GB model is free on the most expensive monthly plan and $619 on the cheapest. Prices for the 32GB model range from $179 to $799.

The phone will retail from $1099 when it is available without a plan.

Apple is expected to offer the phone on its website this evening.

Vodafone would not comment on the reason for the delay, referring inquiries to Apple, which did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Apple earlier this week kept prospective buyers in the dark as to where they would be able to buy the iPhone, confirming it would be available at selected retailers but refusing to name them.
