No charges will be laid over the death of a one-year-old Christchurch boy who was attacked by a dog at his home earlier this month.

A police spokesperson said the death of Sonny-Charles Watson had now been referred to the coroner.

The boy, who was also affectionately known as “Sunshine”, was attacked by a cross-breed dog that lived at the Basingstoke St property in Aranui on August 14.

The city council said the dog was registered and had not previously come to its attention.

Local Government Minister Simon Watts previously told RNZ the government was reviewing the Dog Control Act to ensure councils had the tools to manage dangerous dogs.

“The news of this dog attack is devastating and my thoughts are with the child’s family and everyone affected.

“Every New Zealander should be able to feel safe in their community and not fear being attacked by a dangerous and uncontrolled dog.”

Watts said stronger penalties and greater powers for council officers were among the options being considered as part of the review.

A Givealittle page had raised more than $55,000 for the parents of Sonny-Charles Watson as of Monday.

The page was set up by two “dear friends” of the family to raise funds for them.

“We have created this page to help ease some of the financial pressure on Greg and Jordan during this devastating time,” the Givealittle page stated.

“Donations will allow them the space to grieve and support one another without the added burden of worrying about work, everyday expenses, and the costs that come with such an unexpected loss.”
