Carisbrook favoured as name of local school

The name of the historic Dunedin rugby and cricket ground, Carisbrook, looks likely to live on in the name of a new local school.

The Ministry of Education says the school created by the merger of Caversham, College Street and Calton Hill schools is likely to be called Carisbrook School.

Otepoti South (Maori for Dunedin South) was the name previously preferred by the establishing board of trustees and had been approved by the Ministry of Education.

However, it was dumped by the board following further public consultation and feedback.

Ministry of Education acting regional manager southern Kathryn Palmer said the name for the merged school was discussed by the board at a meeting on Tuesday night, and the ministry now expected formal notification confirming the name change.

Other names considered for the new school included Loyalty, Caroline Freeman, Hillside, William Ings, Pukeraro and Waituna.

Neither the establishing board of trustees chairwoman Isabell Sinclair Irwin nor principal Ben Sincock was available for comment yesterday.
