New traffic lights are being installed on the corner of Crawford and Jervois Sts in Dunedin as part of $500,000 in safety improvements for Crawford St.
New Zealand Transport Agency projects team manager Simon Underwood said the lights were intended to make it safer for pedestrians and vehicles to cross Crawford St.
Retail development in the area had made it busier and attracted more cross-route traffic.
The new lights, which would be operational in coming weeks, would be co-ordinated with others along Crawford St, so there would be no net delay to traffic, he said.
Improvements were also being made to the layout of the Gordon, Police and Rattray Sts intersections with Crawford St, while the cycle lane north was also being completed.
