Dunedin memorial service for miners

A memorial service for the Pike River miners will be held at Dunedin's St Paul's Cathedral on Friday.

The Very Rev Dr Trevor James said the service would start at 1.15pm, and all were welcome to attend.

During the 40-minute service, Dunedin Mayor Dave Cull would read a lesson, while a second would probably be read by a Dunedin MP.

Dr James hoped workers could attend during their lunch hour, and hoped schoolchildren could also attend.

The cathedral held up to 400 people, and Dr James was investigating how to accommodate service-goers in the Octagon, if more people were to attend.

He did not know how many to expect, but had been touched by the hundreds of people visiting the cathedral in the past few days to light candles, pray and sign a condolence book.

Last Wednesday's second explosion at Pike River ended hopes for the 29 miners, who had been missing since the initial blast on November 19.

A memorial service will be held at the Waitaki community gardens in Oamaru on Thursday.

The service will be held at 7.30pm and people have been invited to bring a candle or a stone to place on the cairn at the gardens.
