Learning his pupils would soon have greater, faster access to the internet was "fantastic" news yesterday for King's High School principal Dan Reddiex.

The Dunedin secondary school, together with 238 other schools throughout New Zealand, including 20 in Otago and Southland, will soon receive government-subsidised network upgrades, in preparation for ultra-fast broadband.

The third phase of upgrades is part of the Government's $1.5 billion, six-year broadband investment initiative.

The Ministry of Education will fund up to 80% of each upgrade which cost between $40,000 and $300,000.

King's had already done some upgrading of its information communication technologies and being part of the scheme would enable it to complete the process, Mr Reddiex said.

"It gives [pupils] greater access to information technology and makes it easier for us to source resources off the internet."

Education Minister Anne Tolley said the education system had to evolve to ensure pupils could learn in relevant and engaging ways which prepared them for the rapidly changing world.

"We know access to ultra-fast broadband can significantly contribute to improving [pupil] achievement, by providing a much wider range of learning opportunities for both [pupils] and their teachers," she said.

The inclusion of the latest wave of schools meant more than one-third of state and state-integrated school networks would be ultra-fast broadband capable by the end of next year.

Over the past five years, 473 schools have had their data and electrical cabling infrastructure upgraded to enable broadband speeds of 100Mbps or more.

Communications and Information Technology Minister Steven Joyce said the Government was working to ensure 97% of schools, or 99.7% of pupils, were "on fibre" in the next six years.
