New Zealand Post is threatening to remove the post box at Waldronville, near Dunedin, if it is vandalised again, leaving locals to travel 3km to Green Island to post their letters.

The post box at 333 Brighton Rd was the target of three arson attacks in the past month.

"We would like to keep this box, but the mindless and destructive actions by unknown individuals may leave us no choice but to take it away in the interests of the safety and security of people's mail," Dunedin mail centre leader Murray Rei said.

Mail inside the box was set alight three times in the past month, resulting in damage to mail ranging from slight to destruction.

Partially damaged items on which contact details could be determined were forwarded to either the sender or addressee with a note from New Zealand Post explaining the circumstances.

The company had reported the incidents to the police and urged anyone witnessing any vandalism of the box to contact police.

"It affects a lot of people, senders and recipients, and is very distressing for them all."

Police said they were investigating several incidents of vandalism around Waldronville in recent weeks.
