Library puts rare treasures on show

The dust was blown off some old book covers at the Dunedin Central Library last night.

More than a dozen people took the opportunity to explore restricted areas in the library in the ''Limited Edition: Rare Book Tour'' as part of Dunedin Heritage Week.

Items on display included hand-made World War 1 troop ship journals, a first edition King James Bible, a 1632 Booke of Common Prayer, a tiny Bible in a locket and the Portobello Library collection from the 1860s.

Dunedin Public Library rare books librarian Anthony Tedeschi also took the group through the Reed Gallery's strong room, where its rarest works are stored.

''A. H. Reed and Robert McNab left Dunedin a great legacy,'' Mr Tedeschi said.

The tour is on again on the third floor of the Dunedin Central Library from noon to 1.30pm today.

Bookings are essential.
