The biggest lighting spectacular seen in Otago will illuminate the "Big Night In" community concert in Dunedin next month.

The concert, at Forsyth Barr Stadium on November 12, will feature more than 200 spotlights and a 12.8m by 6.4m backdrop curtain of LED lights behind the back of the stage.

"We're pre-programming all the lighting and video elements for the show so that, once we get there, we can just plug it in and away we go. It gives us a head start on the night," Tom Tom Productions lighting and video designer Dave Spark said yesterday.

"It would be the biggest lighting design we've ever done in Otago."

The design would include six projectors blended together to make giant images on the LED curtain, he said.

"That's something that's never been done in the South Island before, and certainly not in a stadium or concert setting."

The multimedia and colour palette was all controlled from the lighting desk, Mr Spark said.

"For me, the lighting makes the show. It's the final brushstrokes. It's what colours the whole show," artistic producer for the "Big Night In", Doug Kamo said.

"We go through each song and look at what the cast are doing and the peaks and troughs and light it accordingly."

The first full ensemble cast rehearsal was held in the St Patrick's School hall last night.
