Mosgiel UFB installation proceeding

Installation of ultrafast broadband infrastructure is expected to be complete in the Mosgiel area by 2016.

Fibre optic cable is being installed throughout the country as part of the Government's ultrafast broadband initiative.

A Chorus spokeswoman said contractors were installing cable along Gordon Rd and had finished installing it to the business area along Gladstone Rd South.

The residential area of Gladstone Rd North was also complete, so residents could approach their provider for a fibre connection.

The increase to 100Mbps in the central business area was expected to be completed by 2014.

Businesses contacted by the Taieri Times supported the roll-out, although they acknowledged it was causing some short-term inconvenience.

Business areas along Factory Rd would be next and planning was under way for installation for the rest of the town, with the aim of it being complete by 2016.

In Green Island, the network upgrade to 100Mbps from 20Mbps was scheduled to be completed between July 2014 and June 2015.

Dates for the upgrade in Fairfield and Abbotsford were still to be set, although ultrafast broadband had been installed to Abbotsford School.

The ''fibre to the premises'' network meant it would be possible to deliver the highest data speeds that could support services such as internet television and high definition video conferencing.

It involves taking fibre from the local exchange to new fibre cabinets, laying microduct down each street and ''blowing the fibre through the microduct to the premises when a customer is ready to connect to fibre''.

A Dunedin City Council spokesman said the broadband contractors were required to return footpaths to their previous condition which included the ''river'' pattern in the Gordon Rd business district.
