Question time for civic leader

Dunedin Mayor Peter Chin is quizzed by pupil Danielle Collins (9) and her classmates during a visit to Halfway Bush School yesterday.

The school's 55 pupils questioned Mr Chin on topics including the history and weight of the mayoral robes and chains, and what happened when someone "breaks the rules" in the council.

Mr Chin's reply to the last question? "I can ask someone to leave because it's my meeting, the same way the principal can ask someone to leave if they are naughty here."

Principal Stephanie Madden said the pupils were investigating roles and responsibilities in groups.

Pupils studied the school's board of trustees, followed by community groups, then Mr Chin and the council.
