Spotlight on student flats, good and bad

The Otago University Students' Association (OUSA) is shining a spotlight on the best and the worst of Dunedin's student flats this week.

As part of flatting week, which started on Monday and ends on Friday, $200 is at stake for the winner of the "Next Top Flat" competition and full-body sleeping bags - to help protect occupants from the elements - are on offer for those living in the worst flat. This year, an award will also be given to the best landlord.

OUSA president Logan Edgar said flatting week was about building awareness about the "really unfortunate hovels that students are living in".

There were significant consequences for the health of students who lived in cold and damp flats, he said.

The week was also about rewarding good landlord behaviour, he said.

Mr Edgar was keen to see more students signing leases for the academic year, rather than the full year.
