Final debate just a shouting match

After a promising start, the final leaders' debate between Prime Minister Bill English and Labour's Jacinda Ardern descended into a pointless shouting match over policy details.

The 1News debate, hosted by Mike Hosking, started promisingly with both Mr English and Ms Ardern giving each other space to talk about their policies and aims.

Once it got to a discussion on the rural/urban divide, each leader tried to out talk the other and Mr Hosking was part of the problem.

It is unlikely uncommitted voters got anything new from the debate as both leaders, at times, looked tired and ready to snap.

Ms Ardern maintained her positive campaign attitude as much as possible, and Mr English was his relentless self, criticising Labour's tax and water royalty policies.

He refused to back down about the alleged hole in Labour's fiscal plan, despite Ms Ardern calling him out.

The latest 1 News Colmar Brunton poll, released on Wednesday about an hour before the 7pm debate, showed National had soared above Labour, reversing last week's poll.

It showed National up six points to 46% while Labour was down seven points to 37%.

The debate reflected the poll volatility, with both leaders winning on points at various times.
