An art scholarship in the name of slain Scottish tourist Karen Aim was a comfort to her family, her father says.

The inaugural $2000 Karen Aim Memorial Youth Art Scholarships were presented two Taupo college students this week, The Dominion Post reported.

The grants will help pay for tertiary study in the arts for at least the next three years.

The recipients will also make an artwork for public display -- either in New Zealand or in Ms Aim's native Orkney Islands -- before they finish their study.

The Scottish tourist was on a working holiday in New Zealand when she was killed in Taupo in January. A 14-year-old will face trial charged with her murder in February.

Her father, Brian Aim, told The Dominion Post that the scholarships would forge a link between Orkney and Taupo for years to come.

"It's given us great comfort and strength seeing the amount of support that we're receiving from New Zealand," he said from the Orkney Islands.

"The scholarship is just another act of kindness. It'll keep Karen's name in the forefront for some time."

Ms Aim earned a degree in printed textiles in 2003 and was working at Lava Glass in Taupo at the time of her murder.

Mr Aim and his wife Peggy will visit New Zealand next year to attend the 14-year-old's trial. They hope to meet him if he is found guilty.
