Geldof cuts his speaking fee for NZ

Former rock singer turned global hunger campaigner Bob Geldof has reduced his fee to speak at a charity dinner in Auckland tonight.

Geldof (54) will speak in front of 800 corporate guests on "Making a Difference" at a dinner in the Sky City Convention Centre in Auckland.

Single tickets begin at $245 and go to $395 for a VIP seat.

Organisers said Sir Bob's fee was "very reasonable and a lot less than he would be charging around the world for similar things".

David Higgins from Duco Events would not reveal the fee. He said Geldof was in New Zealand for only a day and tonight would talk for about 40 minutes before he answered questions from dinner guests and attended a cocktail function.

During the evening a charity auction would be held and Mr Higgins said it was hoped at least $50,000 would be raised for the Manukau Community Foundation, which helped worthy causes including programmes on literacy, senior citizens, rape prevention, and parenting programmes for migrant women.

Geldof was expected to talk candidly about working with some of the most powerful people in the world, including some of the lighter moments he had shared with them.
