Greenpeace activists charged over protest

Seven Greenpeace activists have been arrested at New Plymouth's Port Taranaki after spray painting "Fonterra climate crime" on the side of a berthed ship.

Police were called to the port about 7am today after reports that the protesters in two small boats were writing on the side of the Indonesian ship, New Plymouth Inspector Fiona Prestidge said.

Today's incident was part of an ongoing protest against the use of palm oil based animal feed in New Zealand because of its devastating climate impact.

Four men and three woman were arrested for intentional damage and entering an exclusion zone without authorisation after docking at a nearby jetty.

All seven activists were from Auckland.

They will appear in New Plymouth District Court on Thursday.

Last month 14 activists lashed themselves to a container vessel off Tauranga.
