Greymouth hospital clear of MRSA

Greymouth's Grey Base Hospital has been reopened for surgery after a superbug scare forced its operating theatres to close last week.

A visiting clinician tested positive to Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) and the hospital acted to stop the bacteria spreading.

West Coast District Health Board community liaison officer Bryan Jamieson said that all operating theatres had been swabbed, cleaned and swabbed again.

All staff and any patients who had come into contact with the clinician had also been tested.

The results of the samples from the operating theatres indicated the areas were clear and the theatres had reopened for surgery.

Surveillance was being carried out as a normal part of the hospital's infection control procedures.
