Gunshot wound man stays silent

A man found in Auckland Domain yesterday with a gunshot wound in his leg is saying nothing about how and why he was shot.

The man (31) spent the night in Auckland Hospital after he made a 111 emergency call for an ambulance on his cellphone.

Police said he had been in the Domain for some time before he called for help but he could not give details about what happened.

He told police his car had been taken and he had been dumped at the Domain but gave police few other details.

Detective Sergeant Mike Cullimore said today the man was still not saying how he was shot, who had shot him or why he had been shot.

He said police had identified the man who was from the coastal town of Whangamata on the Coromandel Peninsula.

"It is looking like he doesn't want to proceed with a formal complaint."

The man was facing charges of failing to report to police yesterday and consuming cannabis. He would not be charged in relation to the shooting and would not reveal who the gunman was, Mr Cullimore said.

"He doesn't wish to speak to us about that," he said.

Police expected to talk to the man again today.
