Lie-flat economy seats a reality

Luxury air travel will soon be a reality for Air New Zealand economy passengers on long-haul flights with the introduction of new lie-flat economy seats later this year.

The airline today unveiled a full-scale prototype of its planned new Boeing 777-300 interior at its Auckland innovation centre.

Included in the prototype are New Zealand-designed 'Skycouch' economy seats, which are arranged in rows of three.

The seats can fold flat all the way to the seat-back in front, creating a space where children can play or people can relax and sleep, Air NZ chief executive Rob Fyfe said.

"Air New Zealand is putting the magic and romance back into flying. For the past three years we have been designing a new long haul experience that will reignite the passion of today's travellers," he said.

"For those who choose, the days of sitting in economy and yearning to lie down and sleep are gone."

The twenty-two sets of Skycouch seats will take up the first 11 rows in economy class.

The seats will be available on selected long-haul flights between Auckland and Los Angeles from December.
