An estimated $1 million worth of cannabis has been seized by police in Hawke's Bay.
Searches of four properties in Napier, Hastings, Tuai and Havelock North yesterday resulted in the discovery of more than 1050 plants and about 10kg of cannabis plant.
Officers found 851 plants at one property alone, along with about $6000 cash, a small amount of methamphetamine and other drug paraphernalia.
Detective Senior Sergeant Mike Foster said the properties were linked and alleged the people involved were part of an organised group with Mongrel Mob connections producing and dealing cannabis.
Five men aged from 37 to 48 were arrested and charged with cultivating cannabis and possessing cannabis for supply and are due to appear in the Hastings District Court next week.
Police said further charges are likely.
Mr Foster said yesterday's operation was the culmination of a four-month investigation and would have a big impact on the local cannabis trade.
