Police have named the 45-year-old woman killed at her home in southeast Auckland on Monday night.
Titiksha Uday Desai, 45, died after the attack in Aberfeldy Ave, Highland Park, about 20km southeast of downtown Auckland, about 10pm on Monday.
Police say the nature and cause of her injuries were the subject of a postmortem examination and would not be released. Early reports said she died after her throat was cut.
A 47-year-old man who knew the victim has been charged with her murder. He was granted interim name suppression which expires tomorrow.
Detective Senior Sergeant Albie Alexander said police were still at the scene of the incident and would be there for another day.
"The scene will remain cordoned off and scene guards will remain in place until such time as the examination is complete" he said.
Members of Ms Desai's family from India were thought to be arranging to travel to New Zealand.
Nobody else was being sought in connection with the killing.
