Tauranga taxi robbery third in two weeks

The knifepoint robbery of a taxi driver in Tauranga last night was the third attack on a cabbie in the city in two weeks.

A 19-year-old man will appear in court tomorrow following the robbery of a woman taxi driver in Tauranga about 11pm.

She was threatened with a knife and robbed of cash and two wallets after driving a man from Mount Maunganui to the bottom of Seventeenth Ave in Tauranga.

The man fled on foot and was tracked by a police dog to Fifteenth Ave motorway, police said.

He was being treated at Tauranga Hospital for a dog bite injury, and was in custody ahead of his appearance in Tauranga District Court tomorrow.

Late last month, two Tauranga taxi drivers were attacked and robbed in separate incidents. One driver suffered serious face and head injuries, and the other was told he would be shot if he told police.

A 20-year-old man and a 22-year-old were arrested over the attacks.

After Easter, Cabinet will consider a proposal by Transport Minister Stephen Joyce requiring taxi drivers to have cameras in their cabs, following the killing of Auckland taxi driver Hiren Mohini and other attacks.

Passengers in New Zealand's 7000 cabs were likely to pay for the extra cost, with one suggestion of about 30c a trip.
