West Coast drug raids continue

Police continued to carry out raids on West Coast properties today in the wake of yesterday's massive cannabis bust.

Yesterday police made several arrests after uncovering a multi-million dollar cannabis cultivation and supply ring centred around Buller.

The searches continued today with raids on properties in the Westport, Cape Foulwind, Waimangaroa and Denniston areas leading to two more arrests.

The officer in charge of Operation Marvel, Detective Inspector John Winter, said inquiries would continue in the region until all tasks had been completed.

A large number of exhibits had been seized and arrangements were being made to relocate them to a secure facility, along with three vehicles that had also been seized.

Power company inspectors had visited hydroponic sites and confirmed the bypass and theft of electricity at some of them.

The sites were well constructed within residential facilities, and contained heat lights, timers and extractor fans, Mr Winter said.

The arrests would cause a ripple effect through the Westport area, he said.

Many people would know the identity of those involved and Mr Winter hoped police would receive further information in the days ahead.

"The operation sent a clear and unequivocal message to those involved in organised crime that police could reach them and hold them accountable for their actions," Mr Winter said.

The busted syndicate was involved in both indoor and outdoor cannabis growing.

Mr Winter believed it had been operating for some time and was worth several million dollars.
