Wind farm go-ahead expected within 'next few weeks'

An announcement that TrustPower is ready to go ahead with the first stage of its Mahinerangi wind farm is expected to be made within "the next few weeks".

The TrustPower board met in Tauranga on Friday and community relations manager Graeme Purches said yesterday it was committed to the project.

"TrustPower has indicated it wants to build the wind farm.

"All the stars are in alignment. We're working on contracts now.

"We hope to be able to make an announcement in the next few weeks."

Mr Purches said that tenders from "a couple" of manufacturers for the supply of between 12 and 16 turbines were considered at the meeting and negotiations were continuing.

"It's simply a matter of committing to a contract with a turbine manufacturer.

"Until such time as we've signed the contract, we won't be in a position to be able to say: `Yes, here it is and here's a start date and here's how many million it's going to cost'."

Mr Purches has indicated previously that Dunedin could be using power from some Mahinerangi turbines before the end of the year.

The final decision on the number of turbines to be erected in stage one will depend on whether TrustPower opts for 2MW or 3MW turbines.

The company plans to generate up to 40MW of electricity from stage one and feed it into the local circuit at its Waipori hydro-electric power station, which serves Dunedin.

The company has resource consent to erect up to 100 turbines on the Mahinerangi site and generate 200MW of electricity.
