XT outage hits top of North Island

Thousands of Telecom XT phones users in the top half of the North Island were left frustrated when the troubled network failed again this morning.

Problems started about 9am and were still being experienced in some parts of the region after midday, Telecom spokeswoman Katherine Murphy said.

The outage was causing problems with calling, text and mobile data services.

She said the problems were at a range of individual cell sites rather than the Auckland Radio Network Controller (RNC).

"It's been intermittent," she said.

"We are starting to see some restoration of services, but it's not complete yet."

It was the first significant outage in the top of the North Island but comes after four serious outages in the South Island and the lower half of the North Island.

Ms Murphy said all those outages were connected to the Christchurch RNC and today's problems were unrelated to those.
