A bypass road being used by motorists to avoid part of Beach Rd, just south of Oamaru, is to be sealed.
The shingle-covered Gardiners Rd has had a huge amount of use since the council closed the end of Beach Rd, where it joins Thousand Acre Rd, because of coastal erosion. The extra use has resulted in accidents.
The Waitaki District Council has now decided to put some of the $300,000 in its seal, widening and extension budget next financial year to seal the road after a resident was critical of the increased use and its current state.
• Hampden sewage: Another attempt is to be made to resolve sewage-disposal problems in Hampden after a fully reticulated treatment scheme for the town proved too expensive.
A working party which has investigated problems caused by some septic tanks wants to continue looking at alternatives for disposal, including the possibility of cluster systems grouping houses together.
The council has set aside $10,000 a year for an investigation from a rate on the Hampden amenity rate area.
