Kurow man 'zapped' and charged

A 37-year-old Kurow man, seen by police on YouTube demonstrating a stun gun on himself, will appear in the Oamaru District Court on Wednesday, charged with unlawful possession of a restricted weapon.

Senior Constable Steve Baddock said yesterday people were not allowed to own or import such stun guns into New Zealand and he was investigating how the man got it.

The YouTube footage, viewed by Snr Const Baddock, showed three short videos of the man "zapping himself" and one of his friends zapping him.

The man had not handed the stun gun to police, the constable said.

The man will also appear in court in relation to allegedly tampering with a speedometer to avoid paying road-user charges.
