Pile driving set to begin

The next major step in building two bridges across the Waitaki River at Kurow starts on Monday with the driving of the first pile.

Contractor McConnell Dowell Constructors had completed commissioning the piling hammer and the pile casing was arriving on site yesterday, NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) project manager Steve Proud said.

Work will start on Monday morning with the driving of the first of the four piles for the smaller of the two bridges spanning 92m over the southern channel of the river, on the Kurow side. Each pile will take about three weeks to complete.

Mr Proud said each of the piles would be 1800mm in diameter and driven to about 22m deep.

Driving of the 11 piles for the 206m-long second bridge, on the Hakataramea side of the river, was expected to begin mid-September and be completed mid-March next year.
