Salmon run won

Despite the Waitaki River forcing Saturday's release of plastic salmon at the annual Glenavy salmon run fundraiser on to dry land, the event was a success.

The salmon race at Waikakahi Stream raised $1070.

Chief organiser Chris Paul said the money would go towards restoring or replacing six salmon trophies damaged by November's fire at the Glenavy Hotel.

Mr Paul said water conditions were too rough to release the sham salmon from the Te Maiharoa Rd bridge.

The Waikakahi Stream comes into the Waitaki River and the river was too high and the current too strong to allow children to retrieve one of the 800 pseudo salmon at the end of the race track, he said.

This year the names of race winners were pulled from a container.

Charlotte Howell (8), of Morven, Glenavy, won $500. She wanted to put her winnings towards a horse.
