Criminals in the Palmerston area may soon be caught on camera.
The Waihemo Community Board, at its meeting on Monday night, is to consider buying a security camera that can be used throughout the area to help catch offenders.
The proposal has come from the community, with the board having to decide whether to make $1000 available from the Waihemo discretionary fund, with $2600 coming from the Lions Club of Palmerston for the rest of the cost.
A report to the board said Victim Support considered the camera would be a valuable aid for police in apprehending offenders who have continually interfered with or illegally entered the properties of ratepayers.
Some residents were continually victimised due to offenders not being seen or caught in the illegal act. One case has been going on for several years.
When not in use for Victim Support, the camera could be used to monitor the town, such as at its public toilets, which have been vandalised several times.
The community would buy the camera, with the police using and maintaining it. Police would also be responsible for the running costs and procedures required to use a security camera.
Offenders could be identified and ordered to make reparation for any damage to property or assets.
When not in use on other properties, it could be sited at the police station to monitor the centre of Palmerston.
