When Greg Marshall thinks about those who received assistance from the Accident Compensation Corporation last year, he wishes he was one of them.

The Wanaka man ruptured his Achilles tendon while skiing at Treble Cone last year and said ACC was refusing to cover his medical costs.

After a $7500 surgery and stint in hospital, he faced a year of rehabilitation which would cost about $2500, he said.

A day of skiing in July ended in Mr Marshall falling over the top of his skis and cartwheeling before coming to a halt against a deer fence.

"I hit the ground pretty hard," he said.

However, ACC did not believe his injury was an accident, a claim which "is beyond me", he said.

His surgeon agreed and they were preparing for "fisticuffs" to gain cover.

Mr Marshall (45) started skiing at age 7.

Last July's injury was only his second.

He hurt his knee while skiing in Canada in 1991 and paid to undergo surgery in Australia.

Of his friends who also participated in snow sports, few had suffered serious injuries.

"It's not a pandemic," he said.
