Affordable Housing Bill flawed, developer says

The Government's approach to the proposed Affordable Housing Bill was flawed, offering only partial solutions to a "very complex and multifaceted issue", a select committee heard from the company behind Queenstown's Remarkables Park development.

Porter Group Ltd director Alastair Porter presented a detailed submission to the committee hearing evidence on the Affordable Housing: Enabling Territorial Authorities Bill in Auckland last week.

Mr Porter said while the company "strongly supported the principle of affordable housing", it believed the Bill's approach was flawed.

"Central government policy initiative is required to address the affordable housing issues, rather than leaving it to the country's 74 territorial authorities to carry the cost of developing their own solutions, as the current Bill proposes.

"Seventy-four territorial authorities means 74 different solutions.

This cannot be cost effective and certainly will not provide consistent solutions," Mr Porter said.
