Goodbye Blue Monkey (2010), by Christchurch artist Tony Cribb, appears in his exhibition of the same name at Artbay Gallery next week. Photo supplied.
Artist Tony Cribb will attend the opening of his first exhibition in Queenstown at an invitation-only launch at Artbay Gallery, on Thursday, June 24, before it opens to the public the following day.

The Christchurch artist will supply more than 25 new oil on canvas pieces for the show, titled "Goodbye Blue Monkey".

Works include Conversations with Dog, This Painting Should Match Your Curtains and Megachicken and Crayonnosaurus Rex Have a Big Fight.

The 33-year-old Christchurch Polytechnic design graduate said yesterday he was looking forward to bringing a large body of work and establishing himself in the Queenstown art market.

"There's a wide variety of subject matter, colour and style, so hopefully everyone will be able to find something to connect with.

"A lot of the work is based on humour, quite often with a deeper meaning flowing beneath the surface."

Artbay Gallery owner Pauline Bianchi said Cribb was inspired while growing up by puppeteer Jim Henson's Muppets and film-maker Tim Burton's imagination, but told his own stories through his paintbrush.

"Known internationally for his famous "Tin Man" series, Cribb's work in "Goodbye Blue Monkey" resembles a travelling circus, with many different ideas, themes and styles all bouncing off one another in what can only be described as the wonderful weird of Cribb, with the king of quirk at the helm.

"People have fallen in love with his series and have come in asking if we have Tony's work, so I've had him here on demand."

The artworks ranged in size from 25cm by 25cm to 91cm by 91cm.

A few canvases in landscape form measured 120cm by 70cm.

All pieces ranged in price from $500 to $3000.

"Goodbye Blue Monkey" is open to the public at Artbay Gallery, from Friday, June 25 until Monday, July 5.
